Kathmandu, built by Gunakama Dev in 723 A.D. is the capital city
named after Kasthamandap, an imposing wooden pagoda near Hanuman
Dhoka.
THE
TOUR VISITS
Hanuman Dhoka, the
traditional seat of royalty in Nepal, the site where His
Majesty King Gyanendra Bir Bikram Shah Dev was crowned, is
in the heart of Kathmandu. The temples in Hanuman Dhoka and
surrounding Durbar Square include some of the finest
specimen of Nepalese architecture with many erotic carvings.
Kumari
Ghar is the residence of the living virgin
Goddess Kumari.
Kastha Mandap, an
interesting temple in pagoda style is said to have been
built from the timber of a single tree. The name of the city
Kathmandu is said to have been derived from this structure.
Ason Tole is one of the
old market areas of Kathmandu. A stroll through this
exciting maze of narrow streets is only a prelude to later
shopping excursions.
Swayambhunath,
a 2000 years old Buddhist monument looking out into the
four-cardival directions, is situated on a hilltop
overlooking the Kathmandu city. It is one of the world's
most glorious chaityas about 3 km from the city center.
Surrounding the hemispherical stupa are many temples and
pagodas and large band
Red faced monkey, the rhesus, believed to be the descendents of "the Hanuman", the monkey
god.
